The San Diego Family Law Council for Children is holding its "Guiding the Lives of Children of Divorce and Separation" educational seminar at USD Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on Saturday, July 16, 2005.  Our keynote speaker is renowned author and social scientist Constance Ahrons Ph.D.

Dr. Ahrons will be presenting the results of her 20-year longitudinal study on children of divorce and separation and providing sound, practical advice, for parents, professionals, and those concerned with the well-being of this growing class of children. . Dr. Ahrons summarizes her interviews with 173 young adults whose parents divorced twenty years ago and discusses implications for practice, policy, and parenting.

Parents and concerned others will gain new knowledge and skills to use in guiding the lives of children of divorce and separation. Dr. Ahrons addresses the negative myths that linger and reinforce an adversarial approach to divorce. She discusses the impact of the legal system and explains how it escalates conflict between divorcing parents. Providing the key essentials for a good divorce Ahrons gives concrete examples of how parents can achieve this goal.

Professionals will gain new knowledge and skills to use in their work with divorcing families and with children whose parents are divorced.  After summarizing and evaluating the current findings she discusses how misinformation has guided current mental health practice and legal decisions. With a focus on custody, living arrangements and coparenting,  Dr. Ahrons presents clear directives on the how to insure the “best interests of children.”
